This shift has been created to manage the increased activity and acuity in the Emergency Department and patient load on the medical unit at the Hospital. The float shift will be filled by a doctor deemed suitable for the role and has senior clinical decision-making ability and skills in both Emergency Medicine and General
Medicine.

The float shift runs from 1300-2300 hours, unless otherwise specified.

The float shift can be filled by doctors who are salaried or on medical service agreements (MSAs).
The float shift on any given day will only become available once the core non-JMO clinical ED shifts have been filled, although, on occasion, there will be exceptions particularly on historically busy days such as Mondays.

The roles and responsibilities of the float doctor include:

1. Check in with Senior MO ED and the Ward to assess and plan patient care
priorities at the commencement of the shift
2. If non-urgent patient care required of float doctor they are to complete any
outstanding results (pathology and radiology) checking in ED
3. RAT (rapid assessment and commencement of treatment) to front load
investigation and treatment of ED patients.
4. Assist with patient load in ED.
5. Act as the medical escort for road ambulance transfer as required.
6. Respond to patient deterioration on the ward and other ward calls.
