Primary Source Verification

Primary Source Verification (PSV) is the process of verifying the authenticity of your qualifications as a Psychiatrist.

This verification comes directly from the original source (e.g., Universities and Medical Schools). This ensures that your Psychiatry qualifications are genuine and meet the Australian standards.

Medical Migration™ is the fastest growing recruitment agency for Psychiatrist IMGs relocating to Australia. Our Medical Recruitment Specialists can arrange your Primary Source Verification: Learn More

Submit qualifications for assessment by the Australian Medical Council

Submit your Tertiary Medical and Psychiatry qualifications for assessment by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). Start by creating an AMC portfolio online at the AMC website. This portfolio serves as your primary hub for submitting documents and tracking your application status.

Next, initiate the primary source verification of your medical and Psychiatry qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) using their Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) service.

Set up your EPIC account and submit your Psychiatry qualifications for verification. The ECFMG will verify your credentials and forward the reports directly to the AMC.

Determine the appropriate AMC assessment pathway for your qualifications. Depending on your training and Psychiatry experience, you will follow either:

  • Competent Authority Pathway
  • Standard Pathway
  • Specialist Pathway

As an Psychiatrist, you will likely be on the Competent Authority Pathway. The Competent Authority Pathway is designed for international medical graduates (IMGs) who have already completed a recognized training program and have passed their examinations in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand. This pathway allows these IMGs to streamline the process of obtaining medical registration in Australia.

As a Psychiatrist on the Competent Authority Pathway you are exempt from the AMC CAT MCQ (Computer Adaptive Test Multiple-Choice Questions) Examination.

This examination is part of the Standard Pathway administered by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and evaluates the medical knowledge of Psychiatrist IMGs to ensure they meet the standards required for medical practice in Australia.

Complete the relevant AMC application form and collate all documents including your primary medical degree, internship or residency completion certificates. Ensure that you correctly certify all documents according to AMC guidelines. Submit these documents to the AMC for assessment and pay the following fees:

  • AMC Candidate Account Fee: AUD 500 (non-refundable)

  • EPIC Verification Fee: Varies based on the number of credentials being verified, typically around USD 100-125 per credential.

  • EPIC Report Fee: USD 47 per report sent to the AMC.

Once your Medical and Psychiatry qualifications are verified, the AMC will issue your AMC Certificate. This certificate is essential for registering with the Medical Board of Australia.

Our Medical Recruitment Specialists can arrange your Primary Source Verification and AMC Registration in our capacity as Medical Recruiter for the Australian Healthcare Sector: Learn More

With your AMC Certificate, apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) to legally practice as a qualified Psychiatrist in Australia.

At this point you are considered ‘Job Ready’ and our teams will work tirelessly to match you with the right employer at no cost to you. We are not Visa Agents, we are Medical Recruitment Specialists that match Overseas Qualified qualified Psychiatrists with Australian Healthcare Employers.

Specialist Registration in Australia as an Internationally Qualified Psychiatrist

All qualified Psychiatry applicants are required to already hold registration by the Medical Board of Australia. The type of registration (limited, provisional or general) depends on your qualifications and experience. Usually an Internationally Qualified Psychiatrist will be granted a Provisional License and then after 12 months this converts to full registration.

In Australia, the professional college responsible for Cardiologists is the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). This is the institution that oversees the training, accreditation, and continuing professional development of Psychiatrists in Australia and New Zealand.

Specialist registration can be granted by RANZCP, although expect this process to take between one and two years, whereas the Competent Authority Pathway can take as little as 4 months.

Area of Need Specialist Registration

There are a number of jobs in Australia for Psychiatrists in geographic areas of need. If you secure a job as a Psychiatrist in an ‘Area of Need’ you can fast track through the RANZCP registration and get specialist registered with the Medical Board of Australia in less than 6 weeks.

However, you will only be able to practice in your designated ‘area of need’.

This new visa class makes it far easier for Australia employers to hire qualified foreign Psychiatrists, with a clear pathway to Permanent Residency.

How Psychiatrist Employers in Australia can recruit from overseas

Hiring Psychiatrists from overseas has become easier for Australian employers with the new “Skills in Demand Visa,” which simplifies the previous Employer Sponsored (TSS) Visas.

Simplified Labor Market Testing

Employers no longer need to advertise positions through Workforce Australia. Now they only need to run two adverts for their Psychiatrist positions. The advertisement period has extended from four to six months.

Revamped Fee Structure

The Skills in Demand visa introduced a trailing fee model, reducing the financial burden of upfront payments for Psychiatrist employers. This also makes it easier for workers to move between employers by taking away the large upfront cost from the initial sponsoring employer.

Enhanced Employer Compliance

The Migration Amendment (Strengthening Employer Compliance) Act, effective from 1 July 2024, introduced stricter penalties and established new offenses for violations of sponsorship obligations. The approval process for Psychiatrists sponsorship applications will include a thorough examination of employer workplace practices, compliance history, any negative findings from regulatory bodies, and past bankruptcies.

Additional steps will enhance post-arrival monitoring to ensure employers adhere to fair pay and conditions for workers. This involves coordination with the tax system and the integration of Tax File Numbers and Single Touch Payroll systems.

These changes have made the Skills in Demand visa more straightforward for employers to hire overseas qualified Psychiatrists.

What is the cost to get Provisional Licensing as a Psychiatrist?

Firstly, you will need to verify your primary medical qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) via the Educational Credentials Evaluation Service (ECES). This verification process costs AUD $500.

You will then need to apply through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) via the Competent Authority Pathway. The costs associated with this pathway include a verification fee of AUD $500 and an application fee of approximately AUD $2,000. These fees cover the processing and evaluation of your application by the AMC.

If you are applying for the Specialist Registration Pathway and not the Competent Authority Pathway then you will also be required to pay for an assessment of your overseas specialist qualifications by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). The assessment fee charged by the RANZCP is between AUD $7,000 and $8,000, depending on complexity.

Once your qualifications are recognized, you will also need to apply for provisional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The application fee for provisional registration is AUD $860.

Medical Migration™ can handle the whole registration process for you from start to finish, simply take our Eligibility Check to find out more.

The total cost for a Skilled Migration application can run into many $000's with no guarantee of success. The maximum cost of a Skills in Demand Visa is simply the cost of your Provisional registration.
