Criteria to apply for Dermatologist Jobs in Australia

While there are hundreds of vacancies for Dermatologists in Australia, to be seriously considered for Employer Sponsored Dermatologist jobs in Australia these are the steps you are required to take:

  • Primary Source Verification through ECFMG/EPIC
  • Submit qualifications for assessment by the AMC
  • Obtain a Job Offer from an Australian Employer
  • Apply for Provisional Registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Apply for a Skills in Demand Visa
  • Complete required supervision and training
  • Engage in continuous professional development
  • Specialist registration with the Australasian College of Dermatologists

Primary Source Verification

Primary Source Verification (PSV) is the process of verifying the authenticity of your qualifications as a Dermatologist.

This verification comes directly from the original source (e.g., Universities and Medical Schools). This ensures that your Dermatology qualifications are genuine and meet the Australian standards.

Medical Migration™ is the fastest growing recruitment agency for Dermatologist IMGs relocating to Australia. Our Medical Recruitment Specialists can arrange your Primary Source Verification: Learn More

Submit qualifications for assessment by the Australian Medical Council

Submit your Tertiary Medical and Dermatology qualifications for assessment by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). Start by creating an AMC portfolio online at the AMC website. This portfolio serves as your primary hub for submitting documents and tracking your application status.

Next, initiate the primary source verification of your medical and Dermatology qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) using their Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) service.

Set up your EPIC account and submit your medical and Dermatologist qualifications for verification. The ECFMG will verify your credentials and forward the reports directly to the AMC.

Determine the appropriate AMC assessment pathway for your qualifications. Depending on your training and Dermatology experience, you will follow either:

  • Competent Authority Pathway
  • Standard Pathway
  • Specialist Pathway

As a Dermatologist, you will likely be on the Competent Authority Pathway. The Competent Authority Pathway is designed for international medical graduates (IMGs) who have already completed a recognized training program and have passed their examinations in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand. This pathway allows these IMGs to streamline the process of obtaining medical registration in Australia.

As a Dermatologist on the Competent Authority Pathway you are exempt from the AMC CAT MCQ (Computer Adaptive Test Multiple-Choice Questions) Examination.

This examination is part of the Standard Pathway administered by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and evaluates the medical knowledge of Dermatologist IMGs to ensure they meet the standards required for medical practice in Australia.

Complete the relevant AMC application form and collate all documents including your primary medical degree, internship or residency and Dermatology completion certificates. Ensure that you correctly certify all documents according to AMC guidelines. Submit these documents to the AMC for assessment and pay the following fees:

  • AMC Candidate Account Fee: AUD 500 (non-refundable)

  • EPIC Verification Fee: Varies based on the number of credentials being verified, typically around USD 100-125 per credential.

  • EPIC Report Fee: USD 47 per report sent to the AMC.

Once your Medical and Dermatology qualifications are verified, the AMC will issue your AMC Certificate. This certificate is essential for registering with the Medical Board of Australia.

Our Medical Recruitment Specialists can arrange your Primary Source Verification and Provisional Registration in our capacity as Medical Recruiter for the Australian Healthcare Sector: Learn More

With your AMC Certificate, apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) to legally practice as a Dermatologist in Australia.

At this point you are considered ‘Job Ready’ and our teams will work tirelessly to match you with the right employer at no cost to you. We are not Visa Agents, we are Medical Recruitment Specialists that match Overseas Qualified Dermatologists with Australian Healthcare Employers.

Specialist Registration in Australia as an Internationally Qualified Dermatologist

All Dermatologist applicants are required to already hold registration by the Medical Board of Australia. The type of registration (limited, provisional or general) depends on your qualifications and experience. Usually an Internationally Qualified Dermatologist will be granted a Provisional License and then after 12 months this converts to full registration.

In Australia, the professional college responsible for Cardiologists is the Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD). The ACD is the institution that oversees the training, accreditation, and continuing professional development of Cardiologists in Australia and New Zealand.

Specialist registration can be granted by the ACD, although expect this process to take between one and two years, whereas the Competent Authority Pathway can take as little as 4 months.

Area of Need Specialist Registration

There are a number of jobs in Australia for Dermatologists in geographic areas of need. If you secure a job as a Dermatologist in an ‘Area of Need’ you can fast track through the ACP registration and get registered with the Medical Board of Australia in less than 6 weeks.

However, you will only be able to practice in your designated ‘area of need’.
