SKILLS IN DEMAND VISA

Skills in Demand Visa

The new Skills in Demand Visa was implemented in 2024. It replaced the the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 Visa and made it much easier for Australian Healthcare employers to recruit overseas qualified staff to fill critical roles.

The Skills in Demand (SID) visa addresses labor shortages in the Medical sector by attracting skilled workers through three distinct pathways:

  • Specialist Skills Pathway
  • Core Skills Pathway
  • Essential Skills Pathway

Most of Medical Doctors are in the Specialist Skills Pathway. Most overseas qualified Nurses are in the Core Skills Pathway, with some roles being classed under the essential Skills Pathway. Regardless of pathway, the benefits of the Skills in Demand Visa for Medical Professionals are evident by the drastically reduced visa processing time.

For a Medical Professional to be eligible for employment in Australia their Medical Qualifications must have been taught exclusively in English. If an applicants qualifications have not been taught in English then an English Test is required. All applicants must be able to demonstrate English language skills at IELTS academic level 7 for all modules.

Medical Professionals applying for jobs in Australia on the Specialist Skills Pathway are not required to have specific years of experience because experience is implied as evidence of Salary. Medical Professional job applicants on the Core Skills Pathway will be qualified in their role with at least 6 months post qualification experience. In our experience Australian Healthcare providers are not looking for entry level positions although we do recruit for these positions occasionally.

The Skills in Demand Visa, set to launch by the end of 2024, directly targets labor shortages in key industries by attracting skilled workers through three distinct pathways: Specialist Skills Pathway, Core Skills Pathway, and Essential Skills Pathway.

Each pathway has specific job offer requirements designed to ensure that only qualified and experienced professionals fill critical roles.

For the Specialist Skills Pathway, your job offer must guarantee annual earnings of at least AUD 135,000. You must secure a job from an approved Australian employer willing to sponsor you. The job must be full-time and meet all relevant Australian regulatory standards.

In the Core Skills Pathway, your job offer must guarantee annual earnings of at least AUD 70,000, and the position must be on the new Core Skills Occupation List, which targets occupations in high demand. The job offer must come from an approved Australian employer ready to sponsor you, ensuring the job is full-time.

The Essential Skills Pathway caters to those with job offers guaranteeing annual earnings under AUD 70,000 in essential skill occupations. Initially focusing on aged care and disability support, it may expand to other sectors with persistent shortages.

All applicants must meet health and character requirements as part of the visa application process. In some cases, the sponsoring employer must demonstrate that they have tested the local labor market and were unable to find a suitable Australian candidate.

This visa streamlines the sponsorship process, reduces administrative burdens on employers and provides job security with longer sponsorship periods and a clear pathway to permanent residency for skilled migrants.

You can absolutely bring your family with you when you apply for the Skills in Demand Visa in Australia.

You must include your family members in your visa application, which means you need to provide the necessary documentation to prove your relationships, such as marriage certificates for your spouse and birth certificates for your children. This ensures that your spouse or de facto partner, as well as your dependent children, can accompany you to Australia.

Each family member included in your visa application must meet Australia’s health and character requirements. This involves undergoing medical examinations and getting police checks.

Meeting these requirements is crucial for the visa application process to proceed smoothly and for your family to join you in Australia without any issues.

Once your visa application is approved, your family members can enjoy several benefits. Your spouse or partner will have the right to work in Australia and your children will have the opportunity to attend Australian schools, ensuring they receive a quality education.

Your family can access Australia’s public healthcare system under the Medicare program. Including your family in your Skills in Demand Visa application allows you to bring them with you to Australia, ensuring they receive similar benefits and rights.

The following guide details how to make your own application to the Medical Board of Australia:

To work as a medical professional in Australia, you must register with the Medical Board of Australia (MBA).

Start by identifying which registration pathway applies to you. The main pathways include the Competent Authority Pathway for doctors trained in countries with comparable standards, the Standard Pathway for those needing to complete the Australian Medical Council (AMC) exams, and the Specialist Pathway for overseas-trained specialists.

Next, complete the Primary Source Verification (PSV) through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) using the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) system.

Create an EPIC account, submit your credentials, and allow EPIC to contact the issuing institutions to verify your qualifications. This verification process confirms the authenticity of your medical credentials and is mandatory for all international medical graduates.

If you are on the Standard Pathway, you must pass the AMC exams. The AMC MCQ Exam tests your basic medical knowledge through multiple-choice questions, while the AMC Clinical Exam assesses your clinical skills in a practical setting.

Submit your application to the Medical Board of Australia, ensuring you include all required documentation such as proof of qualifications, work experience, and PSV reports.

Complete the online application form on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) website and pay the applicable fees.

Demonstrate your English language proficiency through exams like IELTS or OET, unless you are exempt because your medical education and practice were in English.

The Medical Board of Australia will then assess your application. This process includes reviewing your documents and possibly requesting additional information or an interview. If required, you may need to complete a period of supervised practice to demonstrate your ability to work independently in the Australian healthcare system.

Once you meet all the requirements, the MBA will grant your registration, allowing you to practice medicine in Australia.

The Medical Board of Australia process can take as little as 12 weeks, and AHPRA registration can take us to 5 months due to the volume of applications they receive from Overseas Qualified Nurses.

No, we cannot guarantee to find you a job in Australia. While we provide extensive support, guidance, and resources to assist you in your job search, securing employment ultimately depends on various factors beyond our control such as individual employer decisions.
